Mental Health Awareness and Support in Ethnic and Muslim Communities

Mental health challenges are often misunderstood, particularly within certain communities. Different cultures and religious groups, especially within Muslim and ethnic minority communities, may have varying ways of discussing and understanding mental health.

Unfortunately, mental health issues are frequently unrecognised or remain a taboo subject, sometimes perceived as a source of shame or embarrassment. This stigma can discourage individuals from seeking help, leaving them to suffer in silence. In extreme cases, this can result in feelings of helplessness, suicidal thoughts, or self-harm.

Although numerous mental health organisations provide online resources, cultural and religious differences can create barriers between individuals and the professionals available to assist them, as these professionals may not fully understand their unique experiences or circumstances.

“Zee’s MindZ” has been established in loving memory of Zishan, a bright and caring individual whose life tragically ended at the age of 26 years following a mental health crisis. Zishan was a kind-hearted and friendly young man who was always seen with a smile, and offering help to others. Despite his outward demeanour, he struggled privately with his mental health, keeping his struggles hidden from family and friends, perhaps to avoid burdening them. Tragically, Zishan suffered in silence and ultimately lost his battle with mental health.

As family and friends, we are volunteering our time and efforts to support those facing mental health challenges. We believe that establishing a “Buddy System” may provide those in need with a safe space to share their thoughts with someone outside of their immediate circle. This system allows for regular check-ins and support outside of family and friends.

Please note that this is not a medical service. For professional assistance, consult your local healthcare provider.
